Dale Arrowsmith: Following Grandad's Legacy in the Manchester Marathon (2026)

A young boxer is about to embark on a marathon journey, inspired by his grandfather's legacy. Dale Arrowsmith, a professional fighter, is set to run the Manchester Marathon in April 2026, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, boxing legend Roy Richardson. But this isn't just a family tradition; it's a mission to save a beloved boxing gym.

The Roy Richardson Boxing Academy in Stockport, named after the iconic boxer, is in dire need of financial support. With rising costs and a non-profit structure, the gym relies on volunteers to train its young members, aged 11 to 40. The gym's survival depends on the modest fees paid by these members and fundraising efforts.

Dale, aged 31, is determined to make a difference. He says, 'We're doing this out of love for the kids and the sport. It's a struggle with the soaring costs, but we're committed.' He plans to raise funds by running the marathon, just as his grandfather did in the 1980s at the age of 50, to support the very same club.

Roy's boxing journey began in the 1950s, fighting in carnival booths for money. After serving in the Royal Engineers and a stint in New Zealand training young boxers, he returned to the UK and trained at the Bredbury Steelworks gym in Stockport. The gym was later renamed in his honor, recognizing his dedication to the sport and the community.

Sadly, Roy passed away in 2021 due to Alzheimer's, leaving a lasting legacy. Dale, now in charge, is committed to keeping the gym alive. He's running the marathon to raise funds, but also to honor his grandfather's memory and continue his work in the boxing community.

This story is a powerful reminder of the impact one person can have on future generations. But here's where it gets controversial: is it fair to burden the grandson with the responsibility of saving the gym? Should the community step up and provide more support?
