An elderly couple, Larry and Barbara Cook, lost $1.3 million in a Bitcoin ATM scam, believing they were helping the FTC. The couple, aged 82, were convinced by scammers posing as Amazon and TD Bank security agents to convert their life savings into Bitcoin and gold. They were told they were assisting the FTC in catching cybercriminals, but instead, they became victims of a sophisticated fraud scheme. The scam lasted from September 2023 to April 2024, and the couple only realized they had been duped after seven months. The fraudsters gained their trust by insisting they were doing their civic duty and threatening legal action if they didn't comply. The Cooks were instructed to deposit their money into Bitcoin ATMs, and the scammers even sent them convincing letters and emails with spelling and grammatical mistakes. The couple's Medicare payments increased dramatically, and they faced tax issues and the loss of their retirement savings. Despite the devastating impact, the Cooks refuse to let the fraud get the better of them and are sharing their story to warn others and offer comfort to those who have been scammed.
