Brazilian racing driver Felipe Drugovich is embarking on a new chapter in his career, leaving behind the F1 paddock and fully embracing the world of Formula E. But this transition isn't without its twists and turns.
After a three-year hiatus from single-seater racing, Drugovich is back with a bang at the Sao Paulo E-Prix, having signed a multi-year deal with Andretti for the 2025-26 Formula E season. This comes after his remarkable Formula 2 championship win in 2022, which put him on the radar of many F1 teams. But here's where it gets controversial: despite his success and time as a reserve and test driver for Aston Martin, the F1 dream remained elusive.
Drugovich's journey to Formula E was a lengthy one, filled with anticipation and near-misses. He was close to getting the call-up, standing in for Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso, but it never materialized. He even ventured into endurance racing, competing in the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hours and the European Le Mans Series. And this is the part most people miss: his brief stint in IndyCar, testing with Chip Ganassi Racing, showcased his versatility.
However, it was his experience with Mahindra in Berlin that sealed the deal for Formula E. After replacing Nyck de Vries and scoring points in the second race, he knew this was the path to take. A bold move, but was it the right one?
"I feel much better now," Drugovich admitted, expressing his contentment with the decision. "It's mentally refreshing to have a clear goal and a path to follow." But the challenges are clear. He acknowledges that the biggest hurdle in Formula E is the mental aspect of racing, requiring a unique skill to read and react to races.
As he prepares for his debut season, Drugovich remains cautious about setting specific targets. "The focus is on learning and giving it my best," he said. But is this a sign of uncertainty or a wise strategy?
What do you think about Drugovich's move to Formula E? Was it the right call, or should he have held out for an F1 seat? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
