From Undrafted to NBA: Jahmir Young's Inspiring Ascent
Jahmir Young's journey is a testament to perseverance. This isn't just a story about a basketball player; it's a story about grit, determination, and seizing opportunities. Young, who honed his skills at Charlotte before becoming a standout point guard at Maryland, has defied the odds. He's gone from an overlooked recruit to a G League player, and now, he's on the cusp of establishing a consistent role in the NBA.
The Miami Heat recognized Young's potential, converting his Exhibit 10 contract into a two-way deal. This means he could potentially earn over $2 million this season, a significant leap for the former Terps star. This also gives him a real shot at earning a permanent roster spot. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, known for his ability to develop under-the-radar talent, has been impressed.
"He's got a good way about him. He's an experienced player. That speed and quickness with the ball, his ability to get in the paint, knock down threes, is unique," Spoelstra said, highlighting Young's exceptional skills.
Last season, Young split his time between the Chicago Bulls and the G League's Grand Rapids Gold and Windy City Bulls. In 30 G League games, he averaged impressive numbers: 21.5 points, 7.1 assists, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.00 steals in 34.5 minutes per game. His shooting efficiency was also noteworthy, with 45.7% from the field and 86.1% from the free-throw line. He recorded 20 games with 20 or more points, including four games with 30 or more points, and a season-high of 40 points.
During the Bulls' Summer League, he set a team record with 37 points against Milwaukee. In four preseason games with the Heat, he continued to shine, averaging 9.0 points, 2.3 assists, 1.5 rebounds, 1.25 steals, and 18.8 minutes while shooting 44.8% from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. This performance earned him the Heat's final two-way deal, giving him a chance to prove himself in the regular season.
"I was with my agent. We went out to dinner and he just broke it to me. My emotions, of course I'm happy. I called my mom right away. But yeah, just glad and thankful for the opportunity," Young shared with the Miami Herald.
But here's where it gets controversial... While the two-way deal is a significant step, nothing is guaranteed. Spoelstra emphasizes the need for Young to consistently perform, stating, "They just have to continue to stack those days day after day. It's a tough decision process, but that's the life of players trying to make it and get a guaranteed contract."
And this is the part most people miss... The journey from an unheralded recruit to an NBA player is a testament to Young's dedication and skill. He's proven he can compete at a high level. Now, the real test begins: Can he secure a permanent spot in the NBA?
