Breaking: Europe Draws a Line in the Sand Over Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’—But Is It the Right Move?
In an exclusive interview with Euronews’ Europe Today, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis dropped a bombshell: most European nations simply cannot—or will not—join Donald Trump’s ambitious ‘Board of Peace’ initiative. But here’s where it gets controversial: Mitsotakis argues the plan has ballooned far beyond its original UN-endorsed mandate, creating a parallel power structure that many see as a direct challenge to global governance. And this is the part most people miss: the initiative, initially tied to a 20-point Gaza ceasefire plan, has expanded so dramatically that it now invites scrutiny over its scope, Trump’s outsized influence, and even Russia’s involvement.
Mitsotakis didn’t hold back, stating, ‘The consensus is clear: what Trump has proposed goes way beyond the UN Security Council’s mandate. Most European countries cannot participate in something so far-reaching.’ His comments came just a day after an emergency Council meeting on transatlantic relations, where tensions were palpably high. The Greek leader also emphasized that while the U.S. should play a role in Gaza’s reconstruction, any such plan must be ‘limited in scope and time—strictly for Gaza and nothing more.’
The ‘Board of Peace’ was formally unveiled in Davos, but the turnout was underwhelming. Only 20 countries signed on, a far cry from the 35 initially expected. Notably, just two European nations—Hungary and Bulgaria—joined, while heavyweights like Norway, Sweden, France, and Italy opted out. This raises a critical question: Is Europe fracturing over its relationship with Trump’s vision for global peace, or is it standing firm against what many see as an overreach?
Adding to the complexity, Mitsotakis expressed relief over Trump’s sudden reversal on Greenland. After threatening to seize the Arctic territory, Trump instead agreed to a NATO-brokered security deal. ‘The transatlantic relationship is growing more complicated,’ Mitsotakis noted. ‘The EU must assert its own interests more boldly.’ But is this enough? As tensions simmer, one thing is clear: Europe is at a crossroads, and its decisions today could reshape global alliances for years to come.
