MH370 Search Resumes: Renewed Hunt for Lost Malaysia Airlines Plane After 11 Years (2025)

After 11 years of mystery, the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 is set to resume. The plane, which disappeared without a trace on March 8, 2014, carrying 239 people, is expected to be found in the southern Indian Ocean. The Malaysian government has authorized a "no-find, no-fee" contract with Ocean Infinity, a U.S.-based marine robotics firm, to search for the aircraft in a 15,000-square-kilometer area. Ocean Infinity will be paid $70 million only if wreckage is discovered. The search will last 55 days, starting on December 30, 2023, and will focus on areas with the highest likelihood of finding the missing aircraft. This renewed effort comes after an expensive multinational search and a private search by Ocean Infinity in 2018 failed to locate the plane. However, debris from the aircraft has washed ashore on the east African coast and Indian Ocean islands, providing some evidence of its tragic fate.
