Australian MotoGP: Pedro Acosta's Frustration and KTM's Struggles
The Australian Grand Prix lived up to Pedro Acosta's fears, as he finished fifth, far from his usual podium finishes. The 21-year-old KTM rider had been consistently challenging for the top spots since KTM introduced updates after the summer break. With a strong second-place finish in Indonesia and several big names absent for the Australian Grand Prix, Acosta saw this race as a golden opportunity.
Despite taking third in the sprint, Acosta fought hard for the lead early on, but ultimately faded to fifth place, 7.930 seconds behind the winner. Post-race, a frustrated Acosta revealed he was only performing at 70% of his potential and still faced tire issues. He stated, 'It's critical when you race at 70% and end up with tire problems you can't manage.'
Acosta and KTM are close to winning races, he believes, but the current riding conditions are challenging. He added, 'I knew this track would be difficult. It's our worst race on the calendar, both for me and the bike.'
KTM's next-best competitor, Brad Binder, finished in eighth place, over four seconds behind Acosta. Aprilia's double win at Phillip Island further emphasized KTM's struggle, as they now trail by 47 points in the manufacturers' championship.
Despite the setback, Acosta remains optimistic, stating, 'We need to keep pushing because it's the only way.' The team is hopeful that better races lie ahead, with upcoming events in Sepang, Portugal, and Valencia, where they aim to improve their performance.
