Are the Boston Red Sox about to make a huge splash in the trade market? Rumors are swirling that they're eyeing a trade for Ketel Marte, a three-time All-Star infielder, to bolster their lineup. But will this move make sense for the team? Let's dive in!
The Red Sox have been busy strengthening their pitching staff, but now, it seems their focus might be shifting to the position player market. After ranking a disappointing 15th in home runs last season and a dismal 28th after August 1st, it's clear they need more offensive firepower.
While there are some big hitters available in free agency, a trade might be the way to go. According to reports, the Red Sox have already expressed interest in Ketel Marte of the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Marte, a three-time All-Star, has been on a tear, earning All-Star nods in each of the last two seasons. Since the start of 2024, he's played in 262 games and smashed 64 home runs. He's also a back-to-back Silver Slugger winner. Adding a player of his caliber would undoubtedly be a major boost for the Red Sox.
However, here's where it gets complicated... Adding Marte could create some lineup logjams, especially with the current roster. The Red Sox already face the challenge of consistently fitting Triston Casas, Kristian Campbell, and Marcelo Mayer into the lineup, particularly if Alex Bregman stays.
The designated hitter (DH) spot could offer a solution, allowing the team to rotate young infielders. But the DH role is also needed for the surplus of outfielders.
Kristian Campbell has been taking reps at first base in Triple-A, and he and Casas could both be options there. Campbell, who has already signed an extension, is seen as a key piece of the future. He could also share second base with Mayer. Adding Marte, however, would likely solidify Marte's spot at second base.
This could mean Mayer would become a rotational player, getting time at DH, while Campbell sees time at first base and DH. The question is: does Marte's fit make sense right now? It really depends on how the roster evolves in the coming weeks.
Ultimately, the Red Sox's offensive strategy may hinge on whether Alex Bregman signs with the team. If Bregman stays, the Red Sox might shift their focus to a player like Kyle Schwarber, who wouldn't need a defensive position.
Given that Bregman is reportedly a top priority, the offseason plan might assume he'll be playing third base. In that scenario, does trading for Marte make sense?
