Salk: The Seattle Mariners' Complete Transformation
The Seattle Mariners have undergone a remarkable transformation this spring, and it's all thanks to the efforts of their dedicated players and management. After narrowly missing out on the World Series, the team is now a force to be reckoned with, ready to make a serious impact in the playoffs.
In a recent interview, Mike Salk, co-host of Brock and Salk, shared his insights after spending a week with the team at their spring training facility in Peoria, Arizona. Salk's observations reveal a team that has filled its weaknesses and now boasts a truly complete roster.
"This is the most complete Mariner team I've seen in my 17 years of being around this organization," Salk stated. "We'll find out whether or not they're the best one. You have to play the actual games to figure that out."
Salk highlights the Mariners' strong starting rotation, a consistent strength for the team. The bullpen has also been bolstered by the addition of Jose Ferrer, making it deeper and more reliable. The lineup is a sight to behold, with star power at the top, featuring Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodríguez, despite the occasional frustration for some fans.
The biggest addition Salk noticed was the team's improved lineup. The Mariners re-signed Josh Naylor, traded for All-Star Brendan Donovan, and signed veteran Rob Refsnyder. With Donovan and Naylor near the top of the lineup, the bottom of the order now looks more formidable, thanks to the addition of veteran players like Victor Robles and Luke Raley, as well as up-and-coming youngsters Cole Young and potentially Colt Emerson.
"I just think they’ve built a team where, yeah, you’ve got a couple of platoons at the bottom of the order, but you’re not running out the Rowdy Tellezes and Donovan Solanos of the world," Salk explained. "You actually have somebody you want to be there in all nine spots in your batting order, all five spots in your rotation, and virtually every spot in your bullpen. That is a complete baseball team."
