SpaceX's First Twilight Rideshare Mission: Unveiling NASA's Pandora and More (2026)

SpaceX is set to launch its first 'Twilight' rideshare mission, marking a significant milestone in space exploration. The mission, launching from Vandenberg Space Force Base, will reach a 'dawn-dusk Sun-synchronous orbit'.

The Falcon 9 rocket, carrying 40 payloads, will lift off at 5:20 a.m. PST, with live coverage starting 30 minutes prior. This mission is the fifth flight for booster 1097, which has previously launched Starlink V2 Mini Optimized satellites and the Sentinel-6B spacecraft.

Among the payloads are three NASA spacecraft: Pandora, BlackCat, and SPARCS. Pandora, a 17-inch-wide telescope, will study exoplanets' atmospheres, observing them in both visible and infrared light. It will take 10 observations of each planet and its star over 24 hours, providing valuable data for future habitable world searches.

BlackCat, an x-ray telescope, aims to study the brightest, furthest, and oldest explosions in the universe. It's funded by NASA's Astrophysics Research and Analysis Program and is built by Pennsylvania State University. SPARCS, on the other hand, will study solar flares and sunspots of low-mass stars, helping determine the likelihood of life support on nearby exoplanets.

Exolaunch, a launch integrator, manages over half of the 40 deployments, including the Connecta Internet of Things CubeSats and the Araqys-D1/Dcubed-1 satellite, which aims to manufacture a 60-cm boom in space. Kepler Communications will also deploy ten 300-kilogram communications satellites, Aether, designed for high-throughput, low-latency laser links.

The 'Twilight' mission symbolizes a new era of space exploration, pushing the boundaries of what's possible and paving the way for a truly connected space economy.
