In an exciting turn of events, the Detroit Tigers have re-signed left-handed pitcher Bryan Sammons to a minor league contract that includes an invitation to spring training. This move comes after Sammons gained valuable experience playing in Japan last season and now prepares to enter his 31st year.
Sammons was initially selected in the draft by the Minnesota Twins but found his way to the Tigers after being picked up from independent baseball, specifically the Gastonia Honey Hunters, back in 2023. His journey took a significant step forward when he became a starting pitcher for the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens. In a noteworthy moment in July 2024, he made his Major League debut with the Tigers against the Cleveland Guardians, albeit under challenging circumstances. Instead of a clean inning to ease him into the big leagues, he was called upon to pitch in the first inning with two runners on base and three runs already scored. However, he managed to get Bo Naylor out and then went on to deliver an impressive performance, pitching seven additional innings and effectively conserving the bullpen for the remainder of the series.
Following that debut, on August 3rd, during a tight match against the Kansas City Royals, Manager AJ Hinch again turned to Sammons when the team faced a precarious situation in the eighth inning with two runners on and one out. Sammons responded brilliantly, striking out Michael Massey and finishing the inning without allowing any further scoring. His contributions were pivotal as the Tigers clinched a narrow 6-5 victory in eleven innings.
Over the course of his next four appearances, Sammons served as a bulk reliever, stepping in for openers—a strategy that became instrumental for the Tigers as they surged to a remarkable 33-13 record to close out the season. Surprisingly, after only six outings where he posted an impressive 0.915 WHIP, he was sent back down, but not before he had helped bridge the gap until the team could call up rookie Jackson Jobe in September.
Last season in Japan, Sammons logged an impressive 120.2 innings with a solid 3.43 ERA while playing for the Chiba Lotte Marines, showcasing his versatility as he split time between the Eastern League's minor teams and the Pacific League's major teams.
As he rejoins the Tigers this spring, Sammons will find himself amidst a competitive group of candidates vying for bullpen spots in Lakeland.
