Trump urged Chinese President Xi Jinping to consider releasing Jimmy Lai, the Hong Kong pro-democracy magnate convicted under Hong Kong’s national security law earlier this week. In remarks to reporters at the White House, Trump said he spoke with Xi and asked for Lai’s release, though he did not disclose when the conversation occurred.
Lai, a British citizen, has been imprisoned since December 2020 and faces a potential life sentence after a forthcoming sentencing, with the maximum penalty being lifetime imprisonment.
The UK joined the call for Lai’s immediate release. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper condemned the ruling as politically motivated persecution and pressed for Lai’s freedom. She noted that the United States and United Kingdom governments have expressed concerns and that London summoned China’s ambassador to convey their position forcefully.
Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee welcomed Lai’s conviction, saying Lai’s actions harmed the country’s interests and the well-being of Hong Kong residents. Rights groups, however, described the verdict as a harsh and unfounded judicial act, effectively punishing peaceful expression.
Cooper, addressing Parliament, stated that Lai had been targeted for exercising his right to freedom of expression and reiterated the call for his immediate release. She also highlighted that the Foreign Office had publicly stated its position by urging the Hong Kong and Chinese authorities to respect rights norms.
China’s Foreign Ministry rejected international criticism, labeling remarks about Lai’s trial as defamatory and a smear of Hong Kong’s judiciary.
Lai’s conviction stemmed from charges under Hong Kong’s national security law, which rights organizations say curtails dissent, even as Beijing defends the law as necessary for stability. He also faced a separate charge for publishing seditious material under a colonial-era statute related to Apple Daily.
This case has drawn ongoing concern from human rights groups and foreign officials who have long urged Lai’s release amid worries about his health in detention. Lai’s son Sebastien told the BBC earlier this year that, given his father’s age and health, his condition could deteriorate quickly in prison.
