This comes after Steve Witkoff, Trump's envoy, expressed optimism about reaching a deal to end the war. Witkoff believes the key to resolving the conflict lies in addressing a single, critical issue, though he did not elaborate further.
The recent talks have centered around the future of Ukraine's industrial region, Donbas, with a proposal for a demilitarized and economically free zone in exchange for security guarantees for Kyiv. Witkoff's confidence in finding a solution is evident: "If both sides want to solve this, we will get it solved."
But here's where it gets controversial: Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, accompanied Witkoff on a visit to Moscow, indicating a potential shift in focus from the war in Ukraine to other geopolitical interests. This has raised concerns in Kyiv, especially given the recent Russian strikes on Kyiv's power infrastructure, leaving many without basic amenities during the harsh winter.
Zelensky's journey to Davos was not without obstacles. He had initially canceled his trip to deal with the aftermath of these strikes, but his determination to engage in peace talks brought him to Switzerland through the night.
Last month, Zelensky met with Trump in Miami, where they discussed a 20-point US plan to end the war. Zelensky highlighted that Ukraine's position on Donbas differs from Russia's, specifically offering to withdraw troops from a significant portion of the Donetsk region to create an economic zone, provided Russia does the same. The future control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, currently under Russian occupation, is another major point of contention.
And this is the part most people miss: the Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, acknowledged that discussions with the American envoys would continue, but he refrained from sharing Witkoff's optimism about reaching a deal. Putin's decision to join Trump's Board of Peace on Gaza remains pending.
Zelensky had hoped to sign two critical documents with Trump at Davos, addressing security guarantees and economic prosperity. However, the outcome of these negotiations and any potential signings during their meeting remain uncertain.
Despite the uncertainties, Rustem Umerov, the head of Ukraine's national security and defense council, stated that his team had productive discussions with their US counterparts on economic development, post-war recovery, and security guarantees.
