A recent controversy has sparked debates across the nation, with several U.S. airports refusing to display a video by the Department of Homeland Security Secretary, Kristi Noem. This video, which blames Democrats for the ongoing government shutdown and its impact on flight delays, was intended for security checkpoints nationwide. However, airports like Minneapolis-St. Paul International (MSP) and others in Phoenix, Houston, and Seattle have declined to show it, citing political reasons.
The video's debut earlier this month has sparked a divide, with some airports refusing to air it due to its political nature. The Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC), which operates MSP, is evaluating the request under legal requirements, with a spokesperson stating, "TSA is not airing the video while we assess this request."
But here's where it gets controversial: the video, also shared on social media, features Noem stating, "Democrats in Congress refuse to fund the federal government." This statement has led to a backlash, with airports like Buffalo, Charlotte, Cleveland, Los Angeles, and Portland also refusing to show the video.
Airport policies, such as the one at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, explicitly state that political content is not permitted. Similarly, the Port of Seattle has declined to play the video, emphasizing the need for bipartisan efforts to end the shutdown and support federal employees working without pay.
And this is the part most people miss: the 1939 Hatch Act, which restricts federal employees from certain political activities, is being cited by some airports as a reason to decline the video.
When asked about the refusal, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin emphasized the importance of a safe and efficient airport experience, but also blamed Democrats for the shutdown, stating, "Our hope is that Democrats will soon recognize the importance of opening the government."
